USADA Announces Third Quarter Testing Numbers for 2005

The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) performed a total of 1,901 doping control tests in the third quarter (July 1-Sept. 30) of 2005, including 1,750 domestic tests on behalf of the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC).

Out-of-Competition (OOC) testing, which typically occurs at the athlete’s training facility or other location, consists of tests performed with no advance notice to the athletes and tests conducted at camps. Approximately 68 percent (1,298) of all tests performed by USADA in the third quarter were OOC tests. No advance notice testing accounted for more than 62 percent (1,175) of all tests performed during that period.

A total of 123 tests were carried out at camps.

In-Competition (IC) testing, generally performed at events, comprised approximately 32 percent (603) of all tests USADA conducted in the third quarter.  USADA completed doping control tests at 45 domestic and international IC events, including Duel in the Pool (Swimming), USA Cycling Mountain Bike National Championships, the World Cup of Softball, the International Badminton Federation (IBF) World Championships, and the National Target (Archery) Championships.

On behalf of other anti-doping and sports organizations, USADA conducted 151 tests on U.S. and non-U.S. athletes in the United States.  USADA enlisted the assistance of international agencies to perform 19 tests on U.S. athletes living or training abroad.

In the third quarter, USADA announced three anti-doping rules violations, including two suspensions for test refusals and one suspension involving the use of the prohibited stimulant methylphenidate.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movement.  USADA is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.

USADA announces its testing numbers quarterly.  Individual cases of alleged doping violations are announced at the time of the resolution.  For the testing history of individual athletes, visit the official USADA Web site at www.usantidoping.org.
