USADA Announces Program Highlights, Testing Statistics For Second Quarter 2010

In serving its mission to protect the integrity of competition, inspire a commitment to the core principles of true sport, and preserve the rights of U.S. athletes to compete healthy and clean, USADA works proactively through multiple programs, including: athlete and outreach education; out-of-competition, no-advance notice testing; in-competition testing; collaboration with law enforcement agencies; and worldwide cooperation with anti-doping authorities, to support clean athletes in their pursuit of level playing fields. Toward that end, USADA is pleased to share the following statistics and specific highlights for the second quarter of 2010.

SECOND QUARTER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

USADA True Sport Awards Program Recognized Winners; Program Received Mom’s Choice Award

In recognition of their work in teaching integrity, respect, sportsmanship, and healthy choices among America’s youth, Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners were named in the 2009-2010 national USADA True Sport Awards program. Ten entrants were selected as Gold winners, all of whom submitted rigorous, meaningful programs aimed at empowering youth to seek positive life experiences through the powerful vehicle of sport. Additionally, recognized as a Gold winner in the 2010 Mom’s Choice Awards® (MCA), the USADA True Sport Awards Program was named among the best in family-friendly media, products and services in the online resources category. The MCA awards are continuously recognized for establishing the benchmark of excellence in family-friendly resources.

Outreach and Education: Outreach Education programming for the second quarter reached out to more than 3,600 junior level athletes; high school, middle school & college students; teachers and program administrators, athlete support, and parents in 16 cities across 11 states, representing six sports and 14 organizations.

Olympic Education programming for the second quarter reached out to more than 2,496 individual elite athletes, junior athletes, athlete support, medical staff and NGB staff, in 14 cities across eight states, representing more than 21 sports. The programming which consists of material distribution and live presentations occurred at athletic summits, club events, development camps, training camps, national events and conferences, Olympic Training Center Dining Hall Chats, webinars, and conferences for coaches.

For this quarter, USADA’s Global DRO – which provides easily accessible information on the status of specific pharmaceutical products for use by athletes, received 25,278 search inquiries pertaining to U.S. products. In addition, the Drug Reference department received 485 direct call inquiries to the Drug Reference Line and responded to 138 e-mail inquiries.

SECOND QUARTER PROGRAM STATISTICS

USADA performed a total of 2,561 doping control tests in the second quarter. Of those tests, 1,533 (60 percent) were out-of-competition (OOC) tests and 1,028 (40 percent) were tests conducted in-competition. USADA conducted in-competition testing at 68 events in the second quarter. OOC testing typically occurs at the athlete’s home, training facility or other location and is performed with no advance notice to the athlete; however, some OOC tests are coordinated during team training camps.

For the second quarter, USADA announced a total of 11 anti-doping rule violations, including one (1) lifetime ban of a coach for Trafficking and Administering Prohibited Substances, two (2) for refusing to test, two (2) for doping control tampering, one (1) for an anabolic agent, one (1) for a stimulant, one (1) for a diuretic, two (2) for multiple diuretics, and one (1) for marijuana.

USADA announces its testing numbers quarterly. Individual cases of alleged doping violations are announced at the time of the resolution.  For the testing history of individual athletes, visit the USADA website at usada.org.

USADA is responsible for the testing and results management process for athletes in the U.S. Olympic, Paralympic, and Pan American Movements and is equally dedicated to preserving the integrity of sport through research initiatives and educational programs.
