Who we are and what we do
USADA is the national anti-doping organization in the United States for Olympic, Paralympic, Pan American, and Parapan American sport. At USADA, we are dedicated to preserving the integrity of competition, inspiring true sport, and protecting the rights of athletes. We fulfill this mission by administering a comprehensive and independent anti-doping program that focuses on deterrence and detection.
Within its globally recognized program, USADA manages education, testing, science, and results management processes.
USADA helps educate a wide variety of constituencies, including athletes, coaches, medical professionals, and other support personnel about their rights and responsibilities within a robust anti-doping program. Some examples of USADA’s education initiatives are Coach’s Advantage, a tutorial created specifically to provide relevant information for coaches, as well as Athlete’s Advantage, an all-in-one educational session that Registered Testing Pool athletes are required to complete each year before submitting their Whereabouts Filing. These programs cover some of the most important topics in anti-doping, including the sample collection process, Whereabouts, and therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs).
To maintain an effective anti-doping program, USADA engages in strategic test planning and no-notice collection of urine and blood samples – both in and out-of-competition. All testing is conducted in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Code, the World Anti-Doping Agency International Standards, the United States Olympic Committee Anti-Doping Rules, and the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing.
Led by some of the brightest scientific minds in anti-doping, USADA contributes extensively to research on performance-enhancing substances, detection methods, and deterrence strategies. Our science team also leverages their expertise to support USADA’s TUE and results management processes, as well as various education initiatives. On our Ask the Scientists blog, our experts answer questions about everything from banned substances to anti-doping protocols.
Through our results management and adjudication operations, USADA communicates test results to athletes and manages cases in the event of potential anti-doping rule violations. As an organization, we strive to maintain a fair and transparent results management process to ensure that the system is independent and free of any conflict of interest that could arise by involving sport national governing bodies.
